" ‘Apple is looking to create something that’s more relevant, while also fixing longstanding complaints — yes, including the charging port issue,’ said Gurman."
I bet this one will only charge wirelessly on an “exclusive” $299 iMousePad, which comes with a solar panel on the bottom and you have to hang it outside a south-facing window at noon, together with the magnetically attached mouse. But maybe I’m wrong.
I’ll pass. I’ve hated Apple mice. They’ve never lasted all that long for me and cheaper Targus or Logitech mice have been much more durable. They take a beating and still work, whereas my Apple ones have issues after having been stared at too hard.
Strange. I have an original Magic Mouse (removable batteries) still working just find and two of the rechargeable ones that have taken a hammering with 7 days a week working for Apple and my writing. All work just fine.
Magic Mice have one of the lowest support incident rates of any Apple product. All I can say is you must have been using Superman type stares to damage a MM.
Both of my MM2s are 9 years old and still running just fine. Instead of a month, I think I get about 25 days per charge now. How would I cope if I didn’t have two to cycle through?
I do have a couple of Logitech mice that have been used with our PCs and they have the flimsiest sounding/feeling clicks etc.
As for the absolute BS about the hidden charging port. An average charge lasts a month or so and there’s several days of warning before it runs flat. A 10 minute charge will get you through a whole day (bathroom break to charge), and anyone with a modicum of … would plug it in from time to time as they knock off for the day. All a load of wailing about a non-existent issue.
I too like Magic Mice. Over the years, I have had one pack up on me, but I think it was my problem, as my tremor sometimes makes my hand lift the mouse and then put it down rather hard. I think after a number of years it must have dislodged something inside.
Again because of my less-than-controllable hands, I find trackpads very hard to use for many things. But the Magic Mouse combines the functions of mouse and trackpad, it is actually perfect for me.
As far the charging connection is concerned, I find it a strange design decision on Apple’s part, and a bit of a pain, but I still have a non-rechargeable one for when the other needs charging.
If you ask me, the simple and best answer is to go back to using replaceable AA batteries. I don’t understand the fascination with wireless peripherals that sit on a desk all day anyway, but at least make the most perishable part of a device something you can replace yourself. A good set of rechargeable batteries will last many years, too. I’m still using the same four Eneloop batteries I bought around 15 years ago.
They make no sense for stationary devices (other than achieving a cleaner look, less cables and stuff) and even lead to bad decisions / excuses. Like not offering a backlit Magic Keyboard, because of battery life.
