The crash does not seem to be connected with any specific action, Scapple crashes after a random period of time.
There is one bug we’ve fixed where crashing can be caused by any number of actions if the Styles panel is open in the inspector. Can you confirm if you have that open generally?
Yes, I always have it open.
Okay that’s probably all it is then. Any lack of focus, like switching windows, or trying to save or close I’ve noticed, can trigger it (probably other dialogues, given all would switch focus, too).
If you don’t mind using a beta build until the official fix is out, try this download. When I say beta, it’s pretty late beta—as in we’ve cleared all known issues at this point with the exception of one very minor draw bug along the bottom of the scroll bar area in macOS 26. So with the exception of that one change, it is likely as good as stable will be. It has the new icon too, so it’ll fit in better if you prefer dark mode or whatever. (Link removed as the build was not useful outside of testing that one crash.)
Thanks a lot for the very quick reply!
Yes, I will use the beta.
Great, let me know if it doesn’t fix some cases, and what might have been a previous action or two, and we’ll take a look.
A post was split to a new topic: New test build throws XML error on attempted save
Same here. Crashed very often on macOS Tahoe 26.
BTW, it’s possible to change the arrow property on demand such as bi-directional arrow, hexagon shape note container and more connector shape?
Many thanks…
Unfortunately the same problem with the beta as mentioned in the forum:
impossible to save a file (but no more crashes…
)
Yeah, well at least we know the fix for that crash works. I’ll remove the link to the download given it isn’t very useful outside of confirming that.
I have sent three crash reports to support and Ruth S directed me here to check the beta, but @AmberV had already removed it.
Anyway, in my testing, it feels like the issue happens when the window loses focus, either to another app (including things like the CMD-SPACE spotlight widget) or another window within Scapple (like opening another file via Open Recent…, or opening a dialog box to load, print, save, …).
As long as you don’t do that, it seemed to work find for me.
As per instructions from Ruth S via email, I rolled back to 1.4.2. This does not exhibit the crashing, but renders on of my files incorrectly (it puts all the notes that were within a background after the background, and for some reason but the very top note of the whole file at the very bottom. This was not replicated in other files that used notes within backgrounds.) As this was the file I edited while testing the crashing behaviour, that might be part of the issue, but 1.5.1 was able to re-read the file after I edited it.
I was going to try with version 1.5.0 as well, but it doesn’t have a download link.
I assume you know this from the email trail but the other difference between version 1.4.2 I downloaded and what I have installed is that my Scapple is from the App Store, not a direct purchase/download. Just in case its a sanboxing thing.
Okay, give this build a try. It has the fix for the saving error encountered in the previous build, as well as the fix for the crashing.
Initial report: Looking good.
I have three files open. They all render correctly, including the one that failed to render correctly in the beta. I can swap between windows and apps without issue. I could modify, print to PDF, and save a file. I could quit and when I restarted the files opened again without issue.
I don’t actually need to use Scapple at the moment, so I can’t actually test to see how it works ‘for real’, but I’ll keep coming back to it and fiddling with one of the files just to see if there’s a time related issue.
Scapple was stable all day today, but, as I said above, I only interacted with it minimally.
Thanks for checking in. We have a few more minor things to get sorted before we can release to the App Store and etc., but at least the major things seem fixed now.
Also a
from my side:
working with the new beta since yesterday - no crashes, no issues with saving
Came to the forum looking for this issue and solution. Just adding this one is working for me too.
Today I noticed I have a new version of Scrivener (direct purchase). Scapple is still 1.50.1, though. Please update here when the new Scapple version is released so I can stop using the downloaded test version.
I’ve just tried this build and it resolved the crashing problem.
With this build I noticed that when the inspector is open the top window bar and all the tabs are in black. When the inspector is closed, the bar and all the tabs switch to light.
My system setting is dark mode.
