Is there any news on the new app?

It has been half a year since the announcement of the app and nothing else… can people be added to the beta anymore or is it hush until it is fully out?

The beta is currently full. We’ll make an announcement when/if we need more beta testers.

We have nothing more to say about the application itself at this time.

I’m very intrigued about the new app! I’ve been using Scrivener for macOS/iOS for years to work on my novel, but the most I ever do is chapter folders and text section documents (say 4-6 per chapter), a bit of content in the scratch/notes folders and basic text formatting (bold, italics etc). I also write mostly on iPad. I’m writing a text-only novel, so the requirements for formatting are very simple.

As a software developer myself, I can see the benefit of writing a modern and simpler version of what Scrivener does for those who don’t need to have all the bells and whistles but still have the core idea (binder, hierarchical document/chapter structure, export to formats etc).

I couldn’t imagine the complexity that Scrivener has to handle, especially with (I would assume) lots of legacy code and additional complex features etc.

Is there (or should there be) a way of receiving notifications about this new app as they come out?

I suppose news about the new app will be shared here on the Scrivener Community Forum. So you’re in the right place. Just make sure you get e-mail when interesting information gets posted.

We’ll definitely spread the launch announcements far and wide. If you don’t want to follow the forums, scroll down to the bottom of our home page to sign up for our (very low volume) newsletter.

  1. I’m tipping at some point in 2026 we might see the new app. If those of us not in the beta (who’ve had the new app for a long time now) are good little writers… lol
I guess I’m kicking of my new project in the old Scrivener. Just as well I like the program.

Given the distinct lack of any updates whatsoever to prime the pump, so to speak, I’m more inclined to go with 2027 or 2028.

Scrivener is awesome! I do love the part of the process when you sit down and start a new scrivener doc for a new project! It’s so full of promise and anticipation!

Given @pigfender 's wry sense of humour, this:

made me laugh! Albeit I agree with that idea of new beginnings.

That is a depressing thought. Particularly since, the way things seem to be going (or rather not), I can’t disagree with your pessimism. Or my own. lol

I’m inclined to agree with you. Five years at least. Which is probably okay, take your time. Although I’d like to see more screenshots. If I can’t touch, I’d like to at least look.

Five years? Who is writing it, the Bear developers?

I guess the resources are limited. And it’s not like we have no history for that kind of thing. Scrivener 3 for Windows was initially supposed to be released somewhere around 2017, spent several years in beta and was only released in 2021.

And in the case of this new app they are trying to service three platforms at once. I don’t believe it’s easier than preparing an upgrade for one platform. So I don’t expect anything sooner than ~2027.

Any news on the state of the new writing application/online app?

My guess is that this new app is an attempt to compete in the network app category. Monthly subscription. Once you write in the app, you are forever obliged to pay your monthly dues or loose access to any of the editing and publishing features necessary to access the content you have created. It’s hard to create a network cloud based application. Harder still for users to use that app with no or slow or unreliable network access. Even harder is the process of writing a cloud based app that also has platform specific apps that work off-line when network accesss is unavailable or not desired. I have always wondered if Literature and Latte use LiveCode for development or prototyping? Both companies are in England. LiveCode offers a suite of develop on any platform, publish to any platform app building tools based on Java or Javascript. I do believe that L&L will loose many of its customers and its customers loyalty if they go the route o a subscription model. I know that I choose Scrivener at least partly because it is not parscriiption exclusive. I have tried many of the net based writing apps, and mostly came away feeling the experience is creepy and clunky n fundamental ways… I hope L&L don’t go that route, or that they offer a reasonable offline alternative. The problems that L&L have faced as regards cloud storage of Scrivener Projects is not a problem with cloud storage, but rather a problem with how Scrivener’s data and document model were structured, and how that structure is incompatible with iCloud’s own document tree parsing routtinens.

Do you have any facts supporting that guess, or did you pull it completely out of your bottom? :innocent:

There is ZERO to support your suppositions.

Keith (Mr L&L) has stated his opposition to subscriptions.

The new app is NOT net-based. You can sync with iCloud, though not necessary for functionality.

So no, the sky is not falling!

I don’t think I’ve said anything that’s not already in Keith’s initial post.

Scrivener’s project format has significant benefits, with just that one challenge. I’m happy with it, as I’m guessing are tens of thousands of people, and have had (touch wood) zero issues in all the years, versions and platforms I’ve run Scrivener on.

This guess is wrong.

So is pretty much every other statement about L&L in your post.

This is good to hear (read). I loath subscriptions. I can wait. Ok so not very patiently, but I can. lol

Ah, the sands of time shift, yet the echoes of the announcement linger… Perhaps the door remains ajar, or maybe it’s just a shadow of what once was. Who’s to say? :eyes:
