My apologies if this has already been brought up, but couldn’t find a post that fit.
I’ve set up the label and status lists with the same entries as, the way I work, the label and status are the same for each document and folder, i.e. a document with a status of “First Draft” has a label designated as “First Draft.”
This leads to double work on setting status/label in my work. If there is a way to pair the two, I’d love to know how to do it. Or, if that’s not a feature, I’d like to request that it be added to the list of improvements I’d like to see.
The whole point of having two different metadata fields is to make them independent. If you want them to be the same, that’s fine, but it’s not really something we’re likely to build in.
I use labels to color code documents and folders by status so I can zero in on progress in a project visually. Probably not a common approach, but thought I’d ask.
“Status” is just a word that Scrivener assigns to a particular type of metadata. If you prefer, you can use it to identify the point of view character, the setting, the time when a scene takes place, whatever. (Use the Project → Project Settings → Status List pane to rename the field and its contents.)
. . . . . . . .
I too color code my documents as per progress. My “labels” are my actual status system.
I too did clone my labels list in the “status” field, but the only case where I use that is when I have a document that is printed for longhand editing etc. “Printed” is a color coded “label” so that I don’t work on the document in Scrivener to no avail. The status mirrors the label so that I know what label to set it back to when done with the print. Nothing more.
Scrivener is incredibly flexible, as I’m sure you’ll agree. If you want even more flexibility in color-coding, you can add Aeon Timeline to your writing tools.
You could, for example, create an item type (let’s call it “Progress”) and create items assigned to their own unique colors. You can view and update the status of each folder/document (in my case, Novel, Chapter, Scene, or Passage) in any number of views in Aeon Timeline. The cool thing is Aeon Timeline syncs with Scrivener.
The result is you would have your document status in associated colors without having to enter the status in two places.
