If you don’t currently use labels, you can swap labels and statusses, and have the binder color documents, per status.

Labels do not work

For clarity: This is something that has to be done manually, by the user. You rename your labels list “Status”, your status list “Labels”, and then customize their content accordingly. It is not a built in option that would automatically make the status list’s items have colors associated with them. . . . . . . . . . . . That is actually how myself I use labels to track progress. You may also design your own icons, and use them rather than the real status metadata, if you don’t actually use the status for other functions (filter, search and the likes).
