I’m installing V3 on two computers (desktop and laptop) and Scrivener regularly, but not always, freezes when I change some of the options.
It always freezes when I change Project Settings. In fact, I only have to open the dialogue box, make no changes, and click OK, and the program freezes for about 2 minutes, and then seems to recover.
Is it doing this on both your computers ?
Yes, same problem on both.
Is this option checked for your hard drive ? (I think it shouldn’t be)
Not checked on my desktop. Don’t know about laptop right now.
What if you save a project ? Is it freezing just the same ?
And just to be sure, you really mean project settings ? Not the software general settings ?
→ Try temporarily disabling your anti-virus and see if it still freezes. (Turn off the internet if it worries you.)
The program behaves ok when I do File / Save. A short pause, and then I get program control back.
But if I do File / Options / Editing, and change the 'Display Font Hinting ’ option, Scriv freezes. (and it’s the same for many other of these option settings).
And if I do Project / Project Settings and hit Okay, Scriv freezes.
The only anti-virus I use is the Windows one.
I am a bit confused here… changing the font hinting normally requires Scrivener to restart…
When I change the font hinting, I get a blank dialogue box, and Scriv freezes. I guess the box should have text in it telling me that Scriv needs to restart.
Yes, my program settings are the same as pictured.
Is this occuring in the same project on both computers, or in various projects? Where are your files saved?
Same project on both computers. The files are saved locally, and kept in sync via Dropbox - which I only use when Sriv has closed.
I can try another project.
If it’s the same project, try resetting the project’s display:
-
Open the project in Scrivener and create a backup using File > Back Up > Back Up To… If these steps don’t solve the issue, you will be able to restore the original project from this backup copy.
-
Go to File > Show Project in File Explorer, and then close Scrivener.
-
In the File Explorer, navigate into the project folder then into the “Settings” sub-folder.
-
Delete the files called “ui.ini” and “ui-common.xml”.
-
Try opening the project again.
Just tried the font hinting thing with another project, and the same thing happened. Do you want a screenshot?
I’ll let JenT handle it from here (much better at it than I am – and I am out of ideas anyway), but I just want to bring up that given the nature of your other thread :
…it appears to me that your computer, for some reason, has issues with writing to your hard drive.
(Confusing tho that you have two computers acting up… → look for the common denominator)
Feels like something is restricting Scrivener’s access. (Which is why I brought up the anti-virus earlier.)
Ok, I deleted the UI files.
I reopened the project.
It opened in smsall window, with an unfamiliar layout.
I resized the window to fullscreen, then did Window / Layouts / Layout Manager, and restored my old layout…
And the program froze again, with a Windows dialogue box’ “Scrivener is not responding”.
I reopened again, did not apply the layout, and tried to change font hinting. Same problem.
Any suggestions what I might be looking for? They are very different machines, a ten year old desktop running Win 10, and a six month old laptop running Win 11.
– Anti-virus (add an exception for Scrivener)
– And/or test on a fresh newly created project.
– And/or temporarily disable the sync folder. (As in, “save as” your project elsewhere and see.)
As a common denominator, your two computers have Scrivener itself (Version 3.x), the projects that migrated back and forth between the two, and your cloud sync/service. It has to be one of those three possibilities.
At some point, my antivirus completely messed up my Scrivener install, as it suddenly decided that it was malware.
If I had to bet, I’d go with the anti-virus.
